We experience so many losses in life that we tend to overlook the significance of some that can end up having huge impact in our lives.

For instance, when we lose a job or even have it threatened it can send us spiraling into deep grief not simply about the job but about our identity, our sense of security and safety in the world.
When we go through a divorce or end of a significant relationship we can suffer to the loss of a sense of being valued and well as our identity.

Almost any kind of major loss can engender a loss of hope or of faith and trust in the universe (God).

The intangible losses we face on a regular basis can have far reaching impact on our lives because they relate not only to the losses we’ve experienced but to the way we see our present and future lives as well. Left unacknowledged and unquestioned they become the belief systems through which we operate in life whether we are aware of it or not.

Actually it’s the lack of awareness that tends to have the most impact. When we don’t examine our losses and beliefs surrounding them we lose the ability to even wonder if there is any other way of seeing things because we’ve decided that this is the way it is based on what we’ve made up in our own minds.

The bottom line is we need to acknowledge these intangibles as well as the tangibles losses we experience. We also need to question the assumptions we’ve made with kindness and compassion so we can once again live our lives with a sense of peace and possibility.
