Today has been for laughter and fun and silliness. Spent the afternoon with beautiful wise women with whom I have been meeting over Zoom for the past year and a half. It was our first in-person meeting in such a long time, and it was wonderful. We went completely ‘off script’ and just got silly and had fun. I’m a little hoarse from laughing so much. Can’t remember the last time that happened!

We all need a laugh break now and then. John and I will sometimes say or do some silly thing and laugh until we cry. It’s like the whole physiology changes and everything is that much lighter and easier to deal with when we don’t take ourselves so darn seriously.

What makes you laugh? I love British comedies and playing silly tricks on each other and a good joke. I also like seeing the humour in my own ridiculous behaviour at times. A man named Norman Cousins is known to have experienced complete healing from a terminal illness many years ago just by laughing his way through funny movies like the Marx Brothers.

You can’t be depressed or worrying and laughing at the same time. So why not look for what’s funny as well as what we’re grateful for in life? If that doesn’t seem feasible in the moment because we may be caught up in some worrisome thinking then the best way it get there is right through the middle of the difficult feelings, not around them. Trying to talk ourselves out of what we feel isn’t very effective, at least it doesn’t work for me. When I face whatever is going on directly and honestly then I can change the energy to something much lighter.

It all works together for good. Even sharing my foibles with people who care can be an opportunity to laugh at myself and get over it. What a gift that is!
