Even though I’m semi-retired, some days just get busy. This was one of them. Actually, this week is kind of busy after a very quiet time of it last week. You just never know what life is going to bring, do you?

That’s always true even when we think we have everything all thought out and planned out. What’s that saying, man plans, and God laughs? There isn’t anything wrong with plans of course, we just need to learn to wear them lightly so to speak. I really got that working with the bereaved. Sometimes a death may come after a long illness or it can come upon us without any kind of warning as in an accident, overdose, suicide, heart attack, etc. Those people had plans, their families had plans and all of a sudden, they don’t mean a darn thing. Everything is turned upside down.

Life can turn around on a dime for a lot of other reasons as well, as we all know, so it’s helpful to be centered in something that doesn’t change so we can deal with the vicissitudes of life with more equanimity.

I have found a daily meditation practice to be a very useful tool for centering in the Divine. Doing what you might call mini meditations throughout the day is also helpful. That’s just stopping, focussing attention on taking a few nice, full centering breaths, noticing what’s going on in the body while I do and letting it be. In that minute, I’ve shifted from the busy-ness of the mind, through any turbulence on the surface, and into the depths of divinity at the centre of being. It’s relaxing, refreshing, reorienting and helps me to remember that all that stuff on the surface of life may constantly be shifting and changing but underneath it all there’s peace and the possibility of a fresh take regarding whatever has been preoccupying me.

It takes practice and persistence, but it really does pay off.

Try it, you might like it.
