Everything seems so darn serious these days. After my talk on play at CSL last Sunday I decided I needed to incorporate more play and fun in my life. I had become aware I was out of balance with not enough play a while back but really had no idea how to bring more of it into my day.

Well, I still don’t have any big ideas about different fun things I could do that actually interest me, but I have decided to do things I normally do in a more playful way. In other words, lighten up. So far, it’s working for me. I even did some domestic chores that I normally resist today without any complaint, that’s really lightening things up for me! I’ve also started reading one of the required texts for our next class in spiritual direction training on mysticism. I have to say it is not a book I would normally spend five minutes reading as it was written in a very different vernacular than I am accustomed to in 1901 by a Harvard professor and is in the form of the lectures he gave. Yeow! It is all I can do to try to stay with it! But today I decided to just have as much fun with the words as I can, and I have to admit it is somewhat easier reading.

I don’t necessarily mean I’m laughing a lot more or anything like that but I’m not taking myself as seriously with the regular day-to-day stuff which is a much lighter way to approach whatever I do. Another example is as I pondered what to make for supper tonight, I thought about what would be fun and decided to BBQ some smokies instead of the ‘serious’ stuff we usually eat. Fun can show up in the strangest places. There are also some pretty fun and laugh filled moments with my beloved as well. He has a way of throwing in the funniest quotes and comments from old shows like the Goons that are absolutely hilarious. I’m sure people must wonder what the heck we’re doing at times as we go along laughing our heads off on our daily walks. I love it!

Hope you’re having some fun on these beautiful spring days too!
